Three kava flavors in one box, so each dry night can be a different can. 21+. One can is one serving. Never with alcohol.

Damp January is the flexible version of Dry January. Instead of 31 days with no alcohol at all, you decide in advance how you'll cut back: which nights stay dry, which occasions you'll still have a drink at, and what you'll pour instead. There's no official rulebook, which is the point. You write the plan, and this page helps you build one around the nights in your actual calendar. It's written for healthy adults planning a lighter month, not as medical advice. Part of our Dry January guide.

Is Damp January for you?

Damp January suits people who want a lighter month without an all-or-nothing rule: maybe you have a wedding on the 16th, a work trip, or you simply know a hard rule would last until the first Friday. A plan you finish beats one you drop on the 6th.

It isn't the right tool for everyone. If you're worried about how much you drink, if you've tried to cut back before and couldn't, or if you drink heavily every day, a flexible plan isn't the answer. Talk to a doctor or call SAMHSA's National Helpline (free, confidential, 24/7) at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly on your own, because alcohol withdrawal can be serious. If you'd like to look at your own drinking first, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism runs a free site, Rethinking Drinking.

Pick a style of plan

Choose one shape for the month and write it down before January 1. Changing the rules halfway through is how a damp month quietly turns into a normal one.

Whichever you choose, the printable Dry January tracker works for it: tick your dry days and leave the others blank.

Plan by occasion, not by willpower

Think about when you usually have a drink. It's often the same few moments each week. Plan those moments and the rest of the month gets much easier.

Make the dry nights the good nights

A damp month works best when the dry nights are something to look forward to, not the nights you're missing out. A few ideas:

What to stock

Stock for your dry nights before the month starts, so the swap is always the easier option.

One can is one serving. The botanical cans are a swap for the dry nights, not a mixer: never in the same glass or the same evening as alcohol, and don't drive after drinking one. They're for adults 21+ and aren't recommended if you're in recovery.

Keeping the plan on track

  1. Decide in the morning, not at 7 p.m. Look at the day's plan at breakfast. Evening decisions are where plans bend.
  2. Tell one person. A partner or friend who knows your plan makes it easier to stick to, and they might join you.
  3. Keep the drinking nights planned too. A damp plan isn't a free pass on the other nights; decide ahead how those evenings will go.
  4. Check in on Sunday. Five minutes: what went to plan, what didn't, and what's coming up next week.
  5. If it keeps sliding, say so. If you keep breaking your own plan and it bothers you, that's useful information. Talk to someone; the helpline above is a good start.

A damp month ends with the same question as a dry one: what do you keep? After Dry January covers the habits worth keeping and what to keep stocked, and how to drink less alcohol has practical tips for any month.

Quick answers

What is Damp January?

A flexible version of Dry January: instead of no alcohol for all 31 days, you set your own plan for cutting back, such as dry weeknights, dry at home or drinking only at a few named occasions.

What are the rules of Damp January?

There are no official rules. Pick one plan before January 1, write it down, and stick to the same plan all month. The tracker works for marking your dry days.

Do non-alcoholic drinks count on a dry day?

Yes. NA beer, NA wine, mocktails and alcohol-free botanical cans are all alcohol-free. Check NA beer labels if you want zero alcohol, since some contain a trace.

Is Damp January right for me if I'm worried about my drinking?

Probably not on its own. If you're worried, talk to a doctor or call SAMHSA's free, confidential National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly without medical advice.

If it's harder than you expected

If cutting back feels much harder than you expected, or you're worried about your drinking, talk to someone. In the US, SAMHSA's National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping, because alcohol withdrawal can be serious. The botanical cans on this site are for adults 21+ and aren't recommended if you're in recovery.

Who should skip kava

  • Kava drinks are for adults 21+.
  • Kava has rare reports of liver problems, mostly linked to concentrated supplements. Skip it if you have a liver condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take medications that affect the liver or nervous system.
  • Don't mix it with alcohol, and don't drive after drinking it. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
