Why I'm doing this:
My Friday-night drink:
The night I'll need a plan for:
On February 1, I'll:
A missed box is one missed box. Tick the next day and keep going. · softerhour.com/dry-january
How to use it
- Tick at bedtime, not in the morning. The tick is the small reward at the end of the day.
- Fill in the four lines before New Year's Eve. A reason, a Friday drink, the night you'll need a plan for and what you'll do on February 1.
- A slip isn't a reset. Leave that box empty and tick the next one. The month still counts.
- Look at the week, not the month. Each row is one week from Friday to Thursday, the same weeks as our week-by-week plan.
The days worth planning ahead
- Thursday, December 31: New Year's Eve, the night before day one. An alcohol-free New Year's Eve covers the toast and the first weekend.
- Every Friday (Jan 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29): the first night of each week on the tracker. Decide on Thursday what you'll drink on Friday.
- Monday, January 18: MLK Day, a long weekend in the middle of the month.
- Game days: the NFL playoffs run through January. Drinks for game day has a plan for the cooler.
- Sunday, January 31: the last box. How to drink less alcohol helps if you want to keep some of it going.
What to put in the fridge
The Friday line is the one that matters. A non-alcoholic beer, a Dry January mocktail or a botanical can all count. If you want a can, Kava Orange Dream is the easy first flavor: creamsicle-style citrus. One can is one serving, it's for adults 21+, and it never gets mixed with alcohol.
If it's harder than you expected
If a month off feels much harder than you thought it would, or you're worried about your drinking, that's worth talking to someone about. In the US, SAMHSA's National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping, because alcohol withdrawal can be serious.
The botanical cans on this site are for adults 21+ and aren't a substitute for support. They aren't recommended if you're in recovery.
Who should skip kava
- Kava drinks are for adults 21+.
- Kava has rare reports of liver problems, mostly linked to concentrated supplements. Skip it if you have a liver condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take medications that affect the liver or nervous system.
- Don't mix it with alcohol, and don't drive after drinking it. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
