Kanna mocktails: 5 easy recipes

A kanna mocktail is an alcohol-free drink built on a can of kanna instead of a shot of liquor. The can does the job the alcohol used to do, and everything else is the same stuff that makes a good cocktail: ice, citrus, something fresh and a nice glass. Each recipe below uses one can per drink, so one glass is one serving.
All five start with Botanical Brewing Co.'s Kanna Pomegranate Fusion, a sparkling raspberry and pomegranate can, which is one of the few ready-to-drink kanna drinks you can buy. Its berry base works with citrus, herbs and ginger.
1. Pomegranate rosemary spritz
The easiest one, and the best looking. Good for a first try.
You need:
- 1 can Kanna Pomegranate Fusion, chilled
- 1 oz pomegranate juice
- A squeeze of lime
- 1 rosemary sprig
- A spoonful of pomegranate seeds
- Ice
Make it:
- Fill a wine glass with ice.
- Add the pomegranate juice and lime.
- Pour the can over the top slowly so it keeps its fizz.
- Slap the rosemary between your palms to wake it up, then tuck it in with the seeds.
2. Kanna paloma
Tart, salty and bright. The pick for taco night.
You need:
- 1 can Kanna Pomegranate Fusion, chilled
- 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- Flaky salt for the rim
- A grapefruit wedge
- Ice
Make it:
- Run a lime wedge around the rim of a tall glass and dip it in salt.
- Fill with ice, add the grapefruit and lime juice.
- Top with the can and stir once.
- Garnish with the grapefruit wedge.
3. Kanna mule
Spicy ginger against the berry. Serve it in a copper mug if you have one.

- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz ginger syrup, or a splash of non-alcoholic ginger beer
- Fresh mint
- Ice
Make it:
- Fill a mug with ice.
- Add the lime and ginger.
- Top with the can.
- Slap a mint sprig and set it on top.
4. Raspberry basil smash
Muddled fruit makes it taste like a bar drink.
You need:
- 1 can Kanna Pomegranate Fusion, chilled
- 4 raspberries
- 2 basil leaves
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- Ice
Make it:
- Muddle the raspberries, basil and lemon in the bottom of a rocks glass.
- Fill with ice.
- Top with the can and stir gently.
- Garnish with a raspberry and a basil leaf.
5. Holiday cranberry punch (serves 4)
A pitcher for parties and holiday dinners. Mix it right before guests arrive.
You need:
- 4 cans Kanna Pomegranate Fusion, chilled
- 1 cup cranberry juice
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds
- A handful of fresh cranberries
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 rosemary sprigs
- Ice
Make it:
- Add the orange, cranberries, cinnamon and rosemary to a pitcher.
- Pour in the cranberry juice.
- Add the cans last and stir gently.
- Pour over ice: four glasses, one can each.
Tips for better kanna mocktails
- Keep everything cold. A cold can over plenty of ice holds its fizz.
- Add the can last. Pour it in slowly at the end so the bubbles survive.
- Fresh citrus only. Bottled lime juice makes every drink taste flat.
- Use the good glass. Half the ritual of a drink is how it looks in your hand.
Kanna mocktail rules
- One can per glass. Mixing doesn't change the serving: one can is one drink.
- Keep it alcohol-free. Don't turn these into cocktails. Kanna is the swap, not a mixer for liquor.
- Know who should skip it. Never combine kanna with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs) or other serotonergic medications, and skip it if you're pregnant or nursing.
