Three kava flavors in one box, so each dry night can be a different can. 21+. One can is one serving. Never with alcohol.

Damp January is the flexible version of Dry January. Instead of 31 days with no alcohol at all, you decide in advance how you'll cut back: which nights stay dry, which occasions you'll still have a drink at, and what you'll pour instead. There's no official rulebook, which is the point. You write the plan, and this page helps you build one around the nights in your actual calendar. It's written for healthy adults planning a lighter month, not as medical advice. Part of our [Dry January guide](https://softerhour.com/dry-january).

## Is Damp January for you?

Damp January suits people who want a lighter month without an all-or-nothing rule: maybe you have a wedding on the 16th, a work trip, or you simply know a hard rule would last until the first Friday. A plan you finish beats one you drop on the 6th.

It isn't the right tool for everyone. If you're worried about how much you drink, if you've tried to cut back before and couldn't, or if you drink heavily every day, a flexible plan isn't the answer. Talk to a doctor or call SAMHSA's National Helpline (free, confidential, 24/7) at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly on your own, because alcohol withdrawal can be serious. If you'd like to look at your own drinking first, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism runs a free site, [Rethinking Drinking](https://rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/).

## Pick a style of plan

Choose one shape for the month and write it down before January 1. Changing the rules halfway through is how a damp month quietly turns into a normal one.

- **Dry weeknights.** Monday to Thursday are alcohol-free; the weekend is your call. Simple to remember, and it covers the after-work drink.
- **Dry at home.** No alcohol in the house for the month. You can still order a drink at a restaurant or a party, but the fridge only has swaps in it.
- **Named occasions only.** List the two or three events where you'll have a drink (a birthday, a wedding, one dinner out) and keep every other night dry.
- **Dry days you choose.** Pick the days in advance and mark them on the calendar, so the decision is made before the evening arrives.

Whichever you choose, the [printable Dry January tracker](https://softerhour.com/dry-january-tracker) works for it: tick your dry days and leave the others blank.

## Plan by occasion, not by willpower

Think about when you usually have a drink. It's often the same few moments each week. Plan those moments and the rest of the month gets much easier.

- **The after-work drink.** The most automatic one. Put a swap in the fridge where the beer or wine used to be, and pour it into the same glass at the same time.
- **Friday night.** Even on a damp plan, Friday is worth making special. Our [Dry January Friday nights](https://softerhour.com/dry-january-friday-night) page has a ritual, two recipes and a plan for the evening.
- **Dinner out.** Decide before you leave whether this is one of your drinking nights. If it isn't, order the drink you're looking forward to first: an NA beer, a mocktail, a soda with lime.
- **Date night.** A toast doesn't need alcohol. [Dry January date night](https://softerhour.com/dry-january-date-night) has drinks for two and ideas that aren't built around a bar.
- **Game day and parties.** Bring your own cooler of swaps so you're never stuck with only one option. [Alcohol-free drinks for game day](https://softerhour.com/alcohol-free-drinks-for-game-day) has a setup.

## Make the dry nights the good nights

A damp month works best when the dry nights are something to look forward to, not the nights you're missing out. A few ideas:

- **Save your favorite drink for dry nights.** If the good stuff is non-alcoholic, the dry nights stop feeling like the lesser ones.
- **Make a mocktail once a week.** Seven easy recipes are in [Dry January mocktails](https://softerhour.com/dry-january-mocktails), five with a can and two without.
- **Put something in the evening.** A new recipe, a film, a call with a friend. An empty evening is the hardest one.
- **Use the week, not the day.** Our [week-by-week plan](https://softerhour.com/dry-january-week-by-week) is written for a fully dry month, but its weekly check-in works just as well for a damp one: what went to plan, and what's coming up next week?

## What to stock

Stock for your dry nights before the month starts, so the swap is always the easier option.

Prices checked Oct 15, 2026, on Botanical Brewing Co.'s product pages; may change. Per-can prices are the pack price divided by the number of cans.

One can is one serving. The botanical cans are a swap for the dry nights, not a mixer: never in the same glass or the same evening as alcohol, and don't drive after drinking one. They're for adults 21+ and aren't recommended if you're in recovery.

## Keeping the plan on track

1. **Decide in the morning, not at 7 p.m.** Look at the day's plan at breakfast. Evening decisions are where plans bend.
2. **Tell one person.** A partner or friend who knows your plan makes it easier to stick to, and they might join you.
3. **Keep the drinking nights planned too.** A damp plan isn't a free pass on the other nights; decide ahead how those evenings will go.
4. **Check in on Sunday.** Five minutes: what went to plan, what didn't, and what's coming up next week.
5. **If it keeps sliding, say so.** If you keep breaking your own plan and it bothers you, that's useful information. Talk to someone; the helpline above is a good start.

## On February 1

A damp month ends with the same question as a dry one: what do you keep? ## Quick answers

### What is Damp January?

A flexible version of Dry January: instead of no alcohol for all 31 days, you set your own plan for cutting back, such as dry weeknights, dry at home or drinking only at a few named occasions.

### What are the rules of Damp January?

There are no official rules. Pick one plan before January 1, write it down, and stick to the same plan all month. The tracker works for marking your dry days.

### Do non-alcoholic drinks count on a dry day?

Yes. NA beer, NA wine, mocktails and alcohol-free botanical cans are all alcohol-free. Check NA beer labels if you want zero alcohol, since some contain a trace.

### Is Damp January right for me if I'm worried about my drinking?

Probably not on its own. If you're worried, talk to a doctor or call SAMHSA's free, confidential National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly without medical advice.

## If it's harder than you expected

If cutting back feels much harder than you expected, or you're worried about your drinking, talk to someone. In the US, SAMHSA's National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping, because alcohol withdrawal can be serious. The botanical cans on this site are for adults 21+ and aren't recommended if you're in recovery.

## Who should skip kava

- Kava drinks are for adults 21+.
- Kava has rare reports of liver problems, mostly linked to concentrated supplements. Skip it if you have a liver condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take medications that affect the liver or nervous system.
- Don't mix it with alcohol, and don't drive after drinking it. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
